This Earth Day meet the local legends making it easier for you to eat more consciously

If you’re someone that wants to make greener choices, without having to sacrifice the foods you love, you’re not alone. This Earth Day we’re highlighting the ways  Thuisbezorgd and some of your favourite restaurants are taking steps to lower environmental impact

From providing compostable bags made from corn starch, to removing single-use packaging in our restaurant web shop, we’re making it easier for the restaurants on our platform to opt for plastic alternatives, and by increasingly equipping our couriers with electric bikes and scooters, we’re ensuring the food gets to your door in a more environmental and human-friendly way.

But we’re just part of the equation. We sat down with four inspiring restaurant owners that are at the top of their game when it comes to environmentally responsible alternatives. Talking all things environment, these local heroes prove that greener choices can taste great as well.

Why did you opt for eco-friendly solutions?

The sole foundation of our restaurant was to promote a more sustainable lifestyle through food. That’s why we opted for a locally sourced, 100% plant-based menu where we work hard to reduce waste.

Is sustainability important for restaurant customers? How do they react to your eco-friendly offers?

I would say that the largest part of our client base is pretty eco-conscious. They look for healthy & sustainable offerings and Jack Bean ticks those boxes for them. When we initiate new sustainability improvements, we always get a lot of support from our community.

“The foundation of Jack Bean was to promote a more sustainable lifestyle through food.”

Have you always offered sustainable/eco friendly products? And if not, why is it important that you do so now?

From day one. However, we are learning along the way as well. Some choices we made did not sustain due to new insights. One example is compostable packaging. This seemed to be the right choice for us in 2018, but along the way we learnt that these are only composted when the waste stream would be collected separately. Since that’s not happening in Rotterdam, these compostable food boxes end up in the incinerator after all. We are now focusing on paper and cardboard solutions for that reason.

What is one simple thing everyone can do to start living more sustainably?

Eat more plants, more often. Simple as that!

What do you have planned for this Earth Day?

We will launch an important partnership with Soil Heroes to promote more regenerative farming practices.

Björn Burgers

Björn Burgers, Breda

Why did you opt for eco-friendly solutions?

The food industry has a major impact on the environment – in terms of production, transport and waste. A small change in behavior in this sector can have a major impact.

Is sustainability important for restaurant customers? How do they react to your eco-friendly offers?

Some customers are very consciously involved with it. For example, there are customers who call us to complain that two staples were used, while their bags could have been folded. But most of our customers are mainly interested in a good meal. The fact that we use no meat, hardly any plastic and have almost no waste is a bonus, but that is not necessarily what they come back for.

Have you always offered sustainable/eco friendly products? And if not, why is it important that you do so now?

Yes, it is our belief that you don’t have to choose between good food and the environment, they can go hand in hand. Recipes can also taste great without meat, and customers are totally happy with a paper bag instead of a plastic one. Perhaps now is an excellent opportunity to take steps, because corona has put everything on edge.

“It is our belief that you don’t have to choose between good food and the environment.”

What’s one simple thing everyone can do to start living more sustainably?

At BJÖRNBURGERS we would say: “Eat less meat!”. Incredible what we would all save if we all would eat vegetarian one extra day a week.

What do you have planned for this Earth Day?

Customers will receive a free vegan muffin from us on this day, to show (or better: taste) that these are just as delicious without egg and butter. But yes, you have to experience that first to believe it.

traiteur liv

Traiteur LIV, Amsterdam

Why did you opt for eco-friendly solutions?

We believe that making an impact in the field of sustainability should mainly come from companies and we at Traiteur LIV are happy to take the lead in that.

With a view to the new, future generations, we feel responsible for adapting our business operations.

Is sustainability important for restaurant customers? How do they react to your eco-friendly offers?

Our customers are very enthusiastic and are happy to contribute to the future of tomorrow. Sometimes it costs a bit more to make sustainable choices, but for our customers, the importance of sustainability remains above this.

“Our customers are happy to contribute to the future of tomorrow.”

Have you always offered sustainable/eco friendly products? And if not, why is it important that you do so now?

Within a month we made a change to a menu with a balance between vegetarian, vegan and non-vegetarian dishes. And we have switched from plastic packaging material to fully sustainable packaging. It doesn’t take that much time and energy, you just have to want it.

On Earth Day, we go back to basics and appreciate what the Earth has to offer. Early in the morning, during sunrise, we go for an invigorating walk through the Amsterdamse Bos with the whole team.

The Harvest, Rotterdam

Why did you opt for eco-friendly solutions?

Sustainability has been a top priority at The Harvest from day one. We do our best to operate as environmentally friendly as possible throughout our company. Our customers can also expect this from us.

Is sustainability important for restaurant customers? How do they react to your eco-friendly offers?

It is becoming increasingly important, people are realising more and more that everyone can contribute to a better world by making conscious choices. The reactions to our environmentally friendly “Harvest Bowls” are good, because, let’s face it, what could be more fun than being able to eat delicious food and making the world a bit better at the same time?

the harvest
Have you always offered sustainable/eco friendly products? And if not, why is it important that you do so now?

The Harvest has been working with three core values from the start: healthy, local and seasonal. If you work according to these three core values, sustainability and eco-friendliness will come naturally.

“The Harvest has been working with three core values from the start: healthy, local and seasonal.”

What’s one simple thing everyone can do to start living more sustainably?

At The Harvest, we believe that a good relationship with the farmers and as little food kilometers as possible are very important. For example, look at the signs next to the apples in the supermarket. There are actually always apples from the Netherlands and from abroad, just always choose the Dutch apples.

What do you have planned for this Earth Day?

We just do what we always do!
